Picks of the week: Monstress #2 - Written by Marjorie Liu, illustrated by Sana Takeda, and published by Image.
and
Gwen-Pool Holiday Special - Written by Charles Soule, Margaret Stohl, Gerry Duggan and Christopher Hastings, illustrated by Langdon Foss, Juan Gedeon, and Danilo S. Beyruth, and published by Marvel.
Pick of the week: Paper Girls #3 - Written by Brian K. Vaughan, illustrated by Cliff Chang, colored by Matt Wilson, and published by Image.
In this issue of Paper Girls, things are finally happening after a bit of a slow (yet captivating) start. The girls' world has been infiltrated by men in suits of white armor, giant pterodactyls, dinosaurs, and monsters adorned in garbage bags. The weirdness continues as people keep disappearing from town in plain sight, including Mac's step mother. Following up from the ending of the last issue in which Mac accidentally shot a gun, we see now that one of the girls is seriously injured. They steal a station wagon and drive her to the hospital, while simultaneously intercepting transmissions on the walkie talkie from the white armored people about how humans will pay for their sins, or at least that's what it seems in their strange form of english. Some very ominous stuff going on here. We find out this event and the reason they are here is called "ablution" which the internet defines as a ceremonial act of washing. As the girls have an unexpected encounter en route to the hospital, we get even more insight into what the heck is going on here and the ending continues in the apparent pattern and tradition of being a serious cliffhanger. This book is only getting more intriguing, as most of Brian K Vaughan's work does. It's very different from Saga, but amazing in it's own way. Have I mentioned the colors? I don't think I will EVER love the colors in a book as much as I love them in Paper Girls. It's a pastel dream. This is a series on the rise, so you best get in at the beginning while you still can!
YAAAAAAY, the day is finally here! I got my first Smuggler's Bounty box this morning, and I couldn't be more pleased. Okay well, I guess I could be a little more pleased and I will explain why. This month's box theme was The First Order. About a week ago, it leaked that Chrome Captain Phasma was the first pop vinyl, but the second one was left to speculation. As it turns out, it's a black tie fighter pilot! I was hoping for something a little more unique and new, like possibly General Hux or an unmasked Kylo. Also, the way the box works is that there are different combinations of what you might get. I think there were about 4 different possible shirts to get in this box. A shirt with a normal first order trooper, a flametrooper, Phasma, or Kylo. I luckily got the one I wanted, which was Phasma! BUT there is also a possibility of getting a chase pop vinyl instead of the regular one. I got the regular solid black tie fighter pilot, but some people got the chase one with red stripes across it's helmet! They're already going for hundreds of dollars on ebay. After reading about some of the other Marvel subscription boxes, I realized they're all like that. You might get the freakin' awesome stuff, or you might wind up with the not-so-awesome stuff that you don't want as much. I find that kind of annoying, because it winds up being unfair and feels like crap when you see that other people paid the same as what you did for the same subscription, but got way more valuable items by pure chance. It's clever as hell, honestly. My first idea when I found out that's the way it worked was to tell James to subscribe too! That way we'd have more of a chance of getting chase pop vinyls and shirts we want. He didn't, though, because we realized it's just not worth it and the odds are too slim. I'm sure lots of people have had the same idea as me and order multiple boxes to increase their chances, though! Marvel is probably making SO much money from this stuff. Anyhow, the box also came with a really neat Kylo Ren pin, a commemorative First Order patch, and a lanyard covered in little pop style stormtroopers. In general, I think it's pretty awesome, worth the money, and fun to receive. The pops are completely exclusive to the box, so you can't get them in stores, which is sweet. Despite my disappointment in not getting a little Dohmnall Gleeson pop that I could swoon over (he's my favorite ginger), I am pretty happy with this box! The next one doesn't come out till January but it's theme is going to be The Resistance, so yay! You can sign up right here, so hurry while there's still time!
Picks of the week: Silk #1 - Written by Robbie Thompson, illustrated by Stacey Lee, and published by Marvel.
Cindy Moon, aka Silk, has spent the last ten years locked in a bunker. Upon getting out, she realizes her parents and brother are missing. She uses the powers she acquired when bitten by the same spider as Peter Parker to fight the Goblin Nation gang and seek revenge for her brother Albert, who was a member and has been left damaged beyond repair. She got a promotion at work and is now an assistant to the assistants at a news website and also turns in footage of Silk to the editor in chief. Although, some seriously shady things are going on in Cindy's life as well. She is secretly working for the S.H.I.E.L.D agent Mockingbird, and is trying to convince the people of New York that Silk is a bad guy and not a hero. She's having some trouble doing so. Why is she doing this? I have no idea, but I can't wait to find out. The dialogue in this book is amazing and hilarious. I think I might be ever so slightly more in love with Cindy Moon than I am with Gwen Stacy, because Silk is just SO funny and quirky while also maintaining her very obvious intellect and strength. The interiors and background art in this book are some of my absolute favorites. Cindy's apartment is so beautiful and even has a poster of everyone's favorite Sailor Scout. The panels and layouts are dynamic, exciting, and flow incredibly well. The goblin nation look creepy and campy at the same time, which I love. I couldn't be more excited for this book to continue on! ♥ Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur #1 - Written by Brandon Montclare and Amy Reeder, illustrated by Natacha Bustos, and published by Marvel. This book begins with a quote -"Humanity is leaving it's childhood and moving into it's adolesence as it's powers infuse into a realm hitherto beyond our reach." - Dr. Gregory Stock. Lunella Lafaette is a student at a public middle school, but is trying desperately to get accepted into an excellent school for science, which is her life passion. Her big round purple glasses, moon t-shirt, wild ponytail, and furrowed brows already communicate her character so well. She's been rejected by many schools, but doesn't let that get her down and only growns more and more determined. She's been working on a Kree detector, which she is certain they won't be able to say no to. She ventures out one night and uses her detector and happens upon an artifact known as the Nightstone. We then see a flashback to when this artifact was in the hands of Moon Boy and his sidekick Devil Dinosaur, thousands of years ago, where he used it against the tribe of the killer folk. Moon Boy is killed, and sends Devil Dinosaur after them to avenge him. Moon Boy was part of the small folk tribe, whom the killer folk terrorize endlessly. Lunella takes the nightstone to school the next day and accidentally opens a portal, which the killer folk jump through, along with devil dinosaur himself. They soon, unsurprisingly, become acquaintances. I am so ecstatic and pleased that a comic book like this exists for young girls and boys to read. Lunella is a ridiculously awesome character. She stand up for herself when being insulted, believes in what she's doing, is relentless in her dreams, constantly pursues knowledge, and speaks her mind. It's also incredibly important to have a POC as a strong main character! The art in this book is gorgeous, with perfect colors and textures. The facial expressions have so much emotion, and I am already in love with Devil Dinosaur. This may also have something to do with my childood obsession with Prehysteria, Land Before Time, and Jurrasic Park movies and having my own dino sidekick, but I give credit where credit is due! Devil Dinosaur is adorable while also being terrifying. The dialogue is excellent and thought provoking, with a focus on science, which I also love. This title is going to be such a breath of fresh air and a step in the right direction, and will be enjoyed by adults and children alike.
Picks of the week: Ms. Marvel #1 - Written by G. Willow Wilson, illustrated by Takeshi Miyazawa and Adrian Alphona, and published by Marvel.
This is a new #1 of Ms. Marvel but it is (technically) NOT a reboot! Although, if you haven't read the previous run that just ended a month or two ago, you might be a tad confused. This book jumps right into Kamala's new life as a member of the Avengers. About 8 months have passed since the almost-end-of-the-world, and it really changed things for Kamala. Her family knows her secret identity now, she's made new friends, and her relationship with Bruno has changed big time. In fact, he's dating someone! And she's WAY too adorable and hilarious. I love G. Willow Wilson's writing, and I wasn't let down by this first issue of the new run at all. It was funny and awesome, and I can't wait to find out what new problems in Jersey City will plague Kamala.
AND
Huck #1 - Written by Mark Millar, illustrated by Rafael Albuquerque, and published by Boom.
This new series is set in a small town and focuses on a young man with strange abilities named Huck. He is incredibly selfless and uses his powers to do one good deed per day, helping people however he can and not wanting any of the credit. People in the town know what he can do, but nobody tells. Huck is a simple, quiet man and wants to lead a simple quit life. The townspeople respect that, and love him for all that he's done. When one day someone exposes his secret to the world, everything changes for him. I just already adore him so much. He's a gentle giant, and the way he's drawn is so perfect. His face has so much compassion and such endearing expression. I can tell this is going to be a beautiful story.
This month's FanMail box is one of my absolute favorites so far! The theme was Wars Among The Stars and everything was too freakin' wonderful. The first item I pulled out was the black Groot t-shirt, which is beautifully designed. I do wish the t-shirts were printed on a softer, stretchier fabric, but that's okay! My absolute favorite item is the Death Star soap! It smells SO good. The stormtrooper collar clips are a close second as my favorite item. I can't wait to wear them with a one of my dresses. Subtle ways to show how much I love the things that I love are my jam. This box also included two comics! I true believers reprint of the Princess Leia #1 comic and a convention exclusive Guardians Of The Galaxy. I absolutely adore the Leia series, which I've already read and own, and think it gives such a new and interesting perspective on her as a character. Huge fan. This is a great book, and I always get excited when they include comics because I think about all of the new readers it might create! The other items included were a Star Wars themed coloring book, and very galactic-y themed nail stickers. So, I absolutely loved this box. I think it was well thought out, I definitely got my value, and the items perfectly matched the theme! If you want to sign up for FanMail, the link is right >a href=http://myfanmail.com/>here. It's about 25$ a month, which I think it definitely worth it!
Had to split this week into two because there were just so many books!
Picks of the week: Radioactive Spider-Gwen #2 - Written by Jason Latour, illustrated by Robbi Rodriguez, colored by Rico Renzi, and published by Marvel.
This issue begins with Gwens father talking to Ben Parker, aka Peter Parker's uncle and telling him that he knows Spider-Woman is not responsible for Peters death but he has a lead on who might be. Meanwhile, Gwen is down in the sewers fighting with giant green lizard people when Captain America, now a woman named Samantha Wilson, appears and insists Gwen freeze and surrender. She knocks Gwen out, and when she wakes up, the mystery of the lizard men is solved. We also get to see some backstory of this new Cap. This issue was totally awesome, with a lot of new and exciting things going on. I still don't understand why the series got rebooted out of nowhere, but I'm starting not to hate that it did!
AND
Web Warriors #1 - Written by Mike Costa, illustrated by David Baldeon and Scott Hanna, colored by Jason Keith, and published by Marvel.
So this series is basically about a group of various different Spider-people from different Earths, such as Spider-UK, Spider-Woman, and Spider-Ham. They are part of a group called the Web Warriors, and they travel between these different versions of Earth that make up the multiverse and kick bad guy's butts. Spider-UK is kind of the leader, but May Parker (Spider-Girl) and Gwen Stacy (Spider-Woman) are getting a little fed up with it. They go off on their own to have lunch together but wind up encountering crazy foes that they had no idea even existed but who apparently know far too much about them already!
I have two top picks this week because I just couldn't choose!
Pick of the week: Monstress #1 - Written by Marjorie Liu, illustrated by Sana Takeda, and published by Image.
This is an absolutely gorgeous book. This first issue is enormous, and well worth the 4.99 price! It's SO long and every page is more captivating than the next. The art and colors are incredibly beautiful. It's very japanese influenced and looks more like an anime than a manga, yet it's uniquely detailed, intricate, and frightening. The story follows a young woman named Maika who has been taken captive by the Cumaea, an organization of powerful witches in the city of Zamora. These are not like regular witches, and Maika is not like regular people. She is an Arcanic, otherwise known as someone with magical abilities. Unlike Maika who appears entirely human, Arcanics have distinct unique features such as wings, horns, multiple eyes, or even take the appearance of half-animals like a little fox girl that joins Maika. The Cumaea are scientists who experiment on the Arcanics and devour parts of their bodies in order to gain some of their powers. They are corrupt and dark, but they control the city because they were the only defense during the war with the Arcanics years ago. They are afraid because they know a great evil is stirring, and Maika knows it too. She may be captive, but she has a plan. There is most definitely more to Maika and her past than meets the eye. I can't freakin' wait for issue #2.
AND
Pick of the week: The Vision #1 - Written by Tom King, illustrated by Gabriel Hernandez Walta, colored by Jordie Bellaire, and published by Marvel.
In this brand new Series, Vision has created himself a family in the same way he was created. He has a wife named Virginia, a daughter named Viv, and a son named Vin. They've moved to suburbia to try to have some semblance of a "normal" life together. All of the neighbors are pretty much terrified, and the other kids at school just think the Vision twins are weirdos. Despite their efforts to be a family, Vision and his wife Virginia are not quite happy or fulfilled. They sleep in separate beds, don't have actual conversation, and Vision continues to be haunted by memories of his past that upset Virginia for some reason. She spends most of her time alone, and the kids spend most of their time in their room hooked up to computers absorbing information. Vision works a lot, and one day while he's away an unexpected visitor bursts into their home and tragedy befalls them, making a normal life seem even more impossible. So far, I love where this book is going. Vision is one of my favorite Marvel characters and seeing him in this new life is incredibly interesting. I love the character designs of his new family, and the art and colors are phenomenal.
This month's box theme was Yay for YA, as in young adult books! Super cute and super fun. The items include a Hunger Games lightbulb, Percy Jackson and The Olympians necklace, adorable bookmarks, comic books, a poster, and a t-shirt! My favorite item, of course, is the Ollivander's Wand Shop t-shirt! EEP! I also adore the Luna Lovegood bookmark, too. I really wish I were familiar with Six of Crows, because that's what is featured in the poster, but I haven't read it yet. Maybe I will check it out, though! I looked into it and it seems wonderful. That's something I love about these boxes. They get me interested and open up my world to new and amazing things I otherwise might've never known about! This box was definitely worth the 25$ price. You can always sign up right here if you want geeky lady stuff on your doorstep every month!
Pick of the week: The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #1 - Written by Ryan North, illustrated by Erica Henderson, and published by Marvel.
Yay, the return of Squirrel Girl aka Doreen Green, is finally here! Unbeatable Squirrel Girl began in January and they were on issue #8, which came out in August, when suddenly they decided to reboot it for no explainable reason. I'm just happy it's back, although we have no idea why it abruptly stopped in the first place. Doreen is also part of the New Avengers now, so maybe that's why...? This new #1 kind of dives right into things, instead of going through the motions of explaining who Squirrel Girl is, or her origin. They do have handy dandy little "trading cards" at the bottom of the first page who explains who she and all her friends are in cute little summaries. Nancy Whitehead, Chipmunk Hunk, and Koi Boi are all back! In this first issue, Nancy and Doreen are moving into an apartment together, so Doreen's mom comes to visit. No surprise here, but her moms name is Maureen! And she's awesome. They go to lunch and Maureen explains that Doreen isn't quite a mutant, but there's something just completely unique about her DNA or RNA, she's not quite sure. She also tells some cute stories about Doreen as a little girl, like when she tried to put her tail in the washing machine! They go back to the girl's new apartment but are suddenly attacked a weird robot brain dude, known as Brain Drain. They fight him and take him down, but Maureen provides them with some motherly insight and they realize maybe he's just misunderstood! It's a pretty great (second) 1st issue. I guess it explains everything we need to know about Doreen and her friends, but if you want to know more, definitely check out the first run. They just re-released the previous #1 for one dollar a week or two ago, so you can easily find that in stores! If you love quirky-ness, adorable squirrel sidekicks, and hilarious books that are super fun to read, then Unbeatable Squirrel Girl is for you. Eat nuts and kick butts.
Pick of the week: Tokyo Ghost #2 - Written by Rick Remender, illustrated by Sean Murphy, and published by Image.
AGH, I'm obsessed. The first issue of this book was a little overwhelming because they are setting up such a complex world right off the bat and jump directly into the action. In this second issue, we get a more intimate look at the characters and it's totally mind blowing. I cried upon multiple occasions. The issue begins with Led and Debbie returning to Flak Industries to tell Flak that they completed their final mission and want their contracts ended, as they were promised. Unsurprisingly, Flak doesn't want to let them go but swears that he will once they complete one more mission for him. A very important one. He tells them about the Garden of Tokyo, the last tech free and green paradise in the world. According to him, there is a terrible warlord who has taken control of Tokyo and refused to share their crops or resources. Tokyo has an emp field that won't allow any tech in, so Debbie is really the only one that can enter the city undetected. They agree to the mission, without telling Flak that they were already planning to go to Tokyo and never come back. In order for Led to go with Debbie, he has to detox and get all the tech removed from his body. It isn't easy, so she sedates him during their journey to Tokyo. That's when Debbie starts thinking about what it was like before Led ever had tech inside his mind and the person he used to be. Once they arrive in Tokyo, things aren't really as Flak had described and I have a feeling there are some lies being spun. This scene reminds me a lot of Princess Mononoke, which I adore. The world that Remender and Murphy have created is absolutely captivating and I'm so in love with Led and Debbie already. Everyone needs to be reading this book.
This post is a tad late, but I really wanted to make it! I absolutely love FanMail and the concept and goal behind their boxes. It's a super fun community of lady geeks, and I love looking at other peoples reviews and unboxings on instagram and such! This month's theme was Legends Of The CW. Supernatural and Arrow are some of my favorite shows right now and this box included items from both!
My absolute favorite items are the two necklaces they sent. The gold one at the bottom is a replica Felicity Smoak necklace, from the episode "Left Behind" of Arrow! Here's a photo of her wearing it in the show! The other one is a Supernatural necklace, and is the license plate number of Dean's Impala with a demon-warding charm attached. Some other Supernatural items were the awesome t-shirt, which is beautifully designed in a way I've never seen Supernatural apparel look before, stickers, trading cards, and a little toy solider just like the one Sam jammed in the door of the Impala when they were kids. I also love the CC Jitters coffee cozy from Flash! Items that can show off your love for something in such a subtle way are my jam. There's also a figure of Cordelia from a show called Angel, which I'm actually unfamiliar with but it's really well painted and nice quality! There were also some stickers and trading cards of other shows such as Arrow, Vampire Diaries, and Buffy. A really cool Buffy art print on some cardstock was also included, but I forgot to take a photo of it! And lastly, they sent some fake plastic fangs which is really cute because a lot of the CW's shows are centered around Vampires and Halloween is also coming up. They're not in the picture because I was wearing them! Oops.
☆ ☆ ☆
This month was pretty dang awesome. I think the necklaces are beautiful and really unique items to get in a subscription box! I'm always looking for cute ways to incorporate the fandoms I love into my every day wear, and these are perfect. This box was also definitely worth the price of $25 (if not more) which is about how much this box costs per month. You can sign up right here if you're interested! Their theme for October is Yay for YA, and November is Wars Beyond The Stars (um, HECK yessss). October is closed for now, and I should be getting my next box any day now but spots for November are still wide open! This post is of course un-sponsored, I just love this box and want to tell you guys all about it. Do you have a favorite subscription box? Tell me below!
Pick of the week: Star Wars: Chewbacca #1 - Written by Gerry Duggan, illustrated by Phil Noto, and published by Marvel.
This series is also set around the same time as Shattered Empire; after the destruction of the second Death Star. Chewie has set forth on a secret, personal mission. The likes of which have yet to be explained! He finds himself on Andelm 4. Also on Andelm 4, we meet Zarro and her father Arrax. An ugly green thug by the name of Jaum has them cornered, threatening Arrax to pay the debts he owes. When Arrax can't pay, he and Zarro are captured by Jaum and his gang and taken to work in the Andelm beetle caverns. Nearly everyone on Andelm 4 has shared the same fate. Jaum is rising to power, and the Empire is sure to be involved. Arrax won't stand for his child being a slave, so he helps her escape that night in a mine cart. Zarro runs and steals a speeder and makes a hasty get away! When she runs into trouble, guess who intervenes? Chewie steps in to save her, and the two become an unlikely team, keen on taking out the evils at work on Andelm 4 and rescuing everyone in the mines. Phil Noto's art is absolutely beautiful and perfect for this book. His colors and textures convey so much emotion, and Chewie has never looked so soft and huggable. This is going to be a 5 issue series, and I'm so glad I picked it up! I was a bit hesitant at first, but it's funny with an excellent storyline. Can't wait for #2!
AND
Pick of the week: I Hate Fairyland #1 - Written by Skottie Young, illustrated by Skottie Young, colored by Jean-Francois Beaulieu, and published by Image.
As some of you may know, Skottie Young's work is not always adorable little kid versions of Marvel characters. He's an amazing illustrator and storyteller, with quite a dark streak! This is his first entirely self written and self illustrated title, and it's freakin' awesome. The weirdness, violence, and gore is a total juxtaposition with the adorable main character Gertrude and the fantastical world she finds herself in. Gertrude wishes to go to a magical land, and suddenly the carpet in her room opens up and sucks her into a portal as she tries desperately to get away, drops her through the sky and smack dab into the middle of Fairyland. All the adorable residents of Fairyland gather to meet their new guest, who is now covered in blood from the fall with several bones protruding! Gertrude cries that she just wants to go home, and the Queen Cloudia of Fairyland descends and hands her a map. She also designates her a little cricket companion named Larry to help her find her way across the land and back home. Easy peasy adorable adventure, right? 27 years later and Gertrude is still stuck in Fairyland with no sign of her finding her way home. She hasn't aged, but has become a perpetual terror to Fairyland. Robbing banks, blowing things up, killing people, defying the law! Queen Cloudia is not allowed to harm a guest of Fairyland, so she hires an assassin, Brud The Brutal, to hunt Gertrude the menace down! I can't wait to see where this totally chaotic and hilarious story goes. I Hate Fairyland is clearly his love letter to the wacky and whimsical, and you should most definitely pick it up!
Pick of the week: Paper Girls #1 - Written by Brian K Vaughan, illustrated by Cliff Chang, colors by Matt Wilson, and published by Image.
I have been waiting for this book for what feels like an ETERNITY! The story is set in a small town by the name of Stony Stream Ohio on the morning of November 1st 1988, the day after Halloween. Erin is a paper girl and she's one of the first of her kind. Up until now, all the routes in town had been run by boys but Erin and the equally badass other paper girls in town have changed that. The character development is almost instantaneous, because it's clear after just a few panels that these girls are all complex characters with strong personalities, and you quickly care for them and their cause. They're tough, wear awesome studded jackets, smoke cigarettes, and don't take any shit! As they meet up and bike around town at 4am, they encounter some obnoxious teenage guys, and telling them to f-ck off was easy compared to what they'd face next. One of the girls is pushed off her bike and gets her walkie-talkie stolen by four giant men that appear to be wrapped in black gauze. The other girls, pissed off and wanting to make them pay, track them down and follow them into a desolate house. What they find in the basement looks like something out of a sci-fi film, and the girls assume that it's some sort of nerdy replica. As it turns out, it's more than it appears. When they reach out and touch it, their world is turned upside down. What happens next can't be explained and it's Brian K Vaughan's typical fantastic story telling. The art and colors in this book are also completely ethereal and intricate. The layouts are creative and the character design is unique. This is going to be an incredibly popular book, so jump in at the start! It's amazing.
Happy October first! Yay for the best month of the year! I absolutely LOVE decorating for holidays. It gives me little space an extra bit of magic and makes me feel slightly less crappy about not being able to move for a few more months still. Halloween has always been my absolute favorite holiday, or just day in general! Give me all the monsters and pumpkins. I keep some of these things up all year, but most of them I put out for the occasion.
Both of the little signs are from Target and the bat garland is from the dollar store last year. The Always Halloween print is from one of my favorite artists, Rhode Montijo! My monster book is from Wizarding World of Harry Potter and it's one of my favorite things in my room! It actually bites you and runs around until you stroke it's spine again. The skull in the jar is from Target and is available again this year. It talks and it's eyes light up! The creepy cat is from Hobby Lobby this year, and the Pet Ghost Jar is from CVS! The pumpkin glitter garland is from the dollar store and so is the stuffed felt pumpkin on the desk and the orange pumpkin flowers! The Trick or Treat sign is from Target. The skeleton man countdown blocks and the Boo sign are from Michaels last year! The BOO bunting ghost is from Target and those glitter bats are from the dollar store. This lenticular image of Master Gracey is from the new Haunted Mansion giftshop, Memento Mori, at Disney World and the frame is from Home Goods! My cauldron mug is from Target this year and came with a cake mix. This is my favorite part! My ghost Mickey lantern is from Disney World as well. We went to Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party last year and they always have amazing exclusive spooky merchandise. You can't see the whole thing, but I have a stretching portrait from the Haunted Mansion handing above too, which I printed and framed myself! The little dolls and the black cat candle holder are from the dollar store. My candy jar is from Michaels. The light up Jack O Lantern and the skeleton cat are from Spirit Halloween. I have even more decorations in storage but I'm going to save those for next year once we have a bigger space to work with! Do you decorate every year? Where is your favorite place to shop for decorations!? Tell me in the comments! Stay spooky and enjoy the best month of the year!
Pick of the week: Zodiac Starforce #2- Written by Kevin Panetta, illustrated by Paulina Ganucheau, and published by Dark Horse A brand new book about a squad of magical girls! AHHH! I was way too excited to pick up the first issue of this very Sailor Moon inspired book last month, and I was just as excited to read the second issue earlier today. The story is already picking up so much momentum and the characters are getting me right in the heart guts! Four highschool girls named Emma, Kim, Savi, and Molly make up the Zodiac Starforce. They've been drifting apart, but when they realize darkness is afoot at their highschool, they decide to band together once more to kick evil's butt. Each girl represents a different zodiac sign, and they have an awesome transformation sequence and sweet battle armor. One of the girls, Emma, gets touched by a creature from the dark realm Nephos and the mark it leaves starts spreading all over her rapidly. The girls decide to open a portal and visit the goddess Astra who granted them their powers. Astra informs them that Emma's situation is dire, and that everything is bound to get more dangerous now. The girls return to their world, discouraged. In this issue, the darkness is growing more rampant and the girls are scrambling to find a solution! At the same time, there are lots of other things going on. Things that normal highschoolers deal with like stupid boyfriends, crushes, mean girls, etc. This series is super adorable and relatable. Y'know, besides the part about transforming into a magical warrior. These girls have real problems, and real friendships, and they will tug at your heartstrings from the get go! Most definitely pick this one up if you can. The first issue shouldn't be too hard to find in shops, and this one just came out yesterday, so now is the time my friends!
Me and James stopped by Palmcon last weekend! We weren't planning on going, but we spontaneously decided to because it was only 15 minutes away from his house. It's a relatively small convention that has only been going on for only a couple years. You can find out more about it here if you want! Admission was only $13.50. They had a lot of artist exhibitors, some of which were friends of James so it was fun to chat with them! It was nice to go to a smaller convention, because sometimes big ones like Comic Con or Megacon can be overwhelming and a bit stressful! I had fun just walking around and looking at toys, although I wish I'd worn a cosplay! Maybe next year. The only things I took home with me were these Sailor Moon and Totoro keychains! Although I was super tempted to buy those Elite Series Force Awakens figures. It was a fun time, we'll definitely go back next year!
This is probably my new favorite article of clothing! I know I said the same thing about the soot sprite dress, but just look at it! It's covered in acorns, mushrooms, leaves, and totoros. Now is a great time to be a Ghibli fan with all of the beautiful merchandise being put out. This dress is made by Her Universe and you can buy it here! My bag is from ASOS a few years ago and is no longer available, but here is a similar one. My belt and shoes are from Forever 21!
Happy Batman day! DC has been doing an annual Batman Day for the past couple years, and this year was more awesome than ever. As it continues to grow in popularity, the goodies and events do too! The holiday celebrates our beloved Dark Knight in all of his glory. Thousands of comic book shops, book stores, and libraries participate and have cool things going on. We went to Barnes & Noble where most Batman and related books were 20% off, and they were giving out all this sweet stuff! The comic book is a Barnes & Noble exclusive cover of Batman Endgame #1. I'm not sure how many different variant covers there were, but I know it's quite a few. Our local comic book shop was giving out copies with their exclusive cover too, but we didn't get a chance to stop by! That blueprint is the schematic for the new robotic Batman suit that commissioner Gordon wears. I'm like ninety-nine percent sure the little mask with the punch out eyes is a Green Arrow mask, but whatever, it was free! They also gave out bookmarks and temporary tattoos. AND at some select stores, amazing DC artists such as Jim Lee, Grant Morrison, Scott Snyder, Cameron Stewart, etc were doing meet & greets and signings. It was wonderful to see a bunch of kids at the store sitting around reading Batman comics and getting excited! I hope DC keeps this going for many years to come.
It's been a couple weeks since my last friday favorites post! James and I have been so busy working on multiple projects that there is barely enough time to breathe! On the bright side, I haven't felt this creatively driven and inspired in a very long time. Which is great! This week I've been super into everything Batman/Batgirl/Catwoman so I figured I'd make that the little theme for this post. So many cute things to share!
1. Awesome black cat mask necklace. 2. Batman cowl faux knee high tights! 3. Very Batgirl inspired boots. 4. Jiji from Kiki's Delivery Service backpack! 5. Batman mini purse.
1. Yellow peter pan collar blouse! 2. Sailor Moon motorcycle club tee. 3. Puppycat and eggplant blouse. 4. Spider Gwen 3/4 sleeve cardigan! 5. I Knead You cat baseball tee. 6. Captain Marvel knit sweater!
1. Bobs Burgers pop vinyls are coming soon! 2. Iron Giant pop vinyl available to pre-order. 3. Star Wars Smuggler's Bounty subscription box! 4. Harry Potter house themed book sets. 5. Floating lilypad tea infuser. 6. Star Wars themed cookie cutters. 7. Kitty cat measuring cup set!
I am ridiculously obsessed with this dress! It's covered in soot sprites. SOOT SPRITES! I have been a major fan of Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki's work since I was about 9 and saw Spirited Away in theaters with my mom. It was so incredibly magical and other-worldly, like nothing I'd ever seen before. It changed my life and influenced me to think differently and follow an artistic path, hoping one day I could make a movie like that. You can see some of my Ghibli toy collection in this post! You can also see my Ghibli logo tattoo peeking out on my arm, which I got last December. It's my favorite. When I saw this dress I immediately snagged it! I'ts made by Her Universe but is available at Hot Topic! There are also a couple Totoro style ones, which I also picked up and will post about soon! For anyone wondering, my bag is from Forever 21 last year, but here is a similar one. My hairbow is from H&M and you can find it here!
Pick of the week: Over The Garden Wall #2 - Written by Pat Mchale, illustrated by Jim Campbell, and published by Kaboom! This series is amazing so far! I absolutely LOVE Over The Garden Wall. It's one of my all time favorite cartoons, and it's just an absolutely beautifully told story. I don't even wish the show were longer, because it's perfect exactly the way it is. This series gives us a look into some backstory of some of the more minor characters, as well as little short stories about Wirt, Greg, and Beatrice's adventures between events in the show. This particular issue is about Fred the Horse and The Highway Man from the Tavern episode! The Highway Man has some hidden secrets that I don't think anybody was expecting. It's freakin' awesome to get just a tiny bit more story out of this wonderful cartoon, and now comic book.
Pick of the week: Invincible #123 - Written by Robert Kirkman, illustrated by Ryan Ottley, and published by Image. So this book has been going on for quite awhile now! This series has a special place in my heart because it's one of the first that I read when I started discovering the realm of comics. At the beginning, this book was about a teenage boy named Mark Grayson in his senior year of highschool desperately wanting to gain the superpowers he knows he should have. His mother is a human, but his father is from another planet called Viltrum and has powers similar to Superman. Mark inevitably gets his powers and joins a team of other teen heroes, consisting of Atom Eve, Duplikate, Robot, and Rexplode. They have normal problems that teenagers have and fight bad guys in their spare time. Then, Mark finds out things about his father that change everything. 100 something issues later and things are entirely different and completely crazy. There is space travel, bug people, giant talking dinosaurs, invasions, the world ends, giant monsters, cloning, alternate dimensions, and so on and so forth. This book is SO much fun and such a feat of storytelling. It's never boring. I feel like I know these characters like I know my best friend. Mark has loved and lost, and grown so much over the series. It's incredibly real and packed with emotion and action at the same time. This issue was bittersweet because it's actually the last one before the series gets REBOOTED! I guess I understand why they're doing it. Without spoiling anything, Mark and Atom Eve have changed so much and the problems they used to have are kind of distant now. I suppose it's time for some new dilemmas and action. Seriously though, this is my absolute favorite superhero book. It was a blast picking up all the trades and reading them one after another. There are 21 of them! If you'd like to take on reading a long and exciting series, Invincible is perfect for you!
It's officially been a week since Force Friday so I figured I'd do a little haul post! As I'm sure most of y'all know, September 4th aka Force Friday was the day that most of the new merchandise for Star Wars: The Force Awakens was released world wide! Super exciting. But are any of you guys as shocked as I am that they didn't release a new trailer, too? I was totally expecting one. Anyhow, on Force Friday, lots of places opened up at midnight to premier the new merchandise! We chose to go to Toys R Us first. I'm glad we did. There were only about 40 people waiting in line in total, and we were about 5th. They were giving away goodies, and Geoffrey the giraffe was there. That was pretty hilarious. It was very organized, and pretty well stocked, but people did snatch up all the best stuff pretty quickly. Then we went to Walmart, where they had free Star Wars cupcakes! It wasn't as well stocked, but then again we were an hour late. The next morning we hit up Target, the Disney Store, and Hot Topic! I figured I'd share the awesome things we were able to pick up. I'm totally not allowing myself to spend any more money for awhile on Star Wars merchandise, that's for sure! Well, at least until I see the next mind blowingly awesome thing.
♥
The grey top with the metallic lettering is from Target and the BB-8 shirt is from Walmart! The grey one is my favorite because it's actually a really soft and flowy high-lo top with a super flattering neckline.
As for the toys, we got them all at Toys R Us when it opened at midnight! We got super lucky to find everything we wanted. I was mostly after the pop vinyls, while James wanted the black series. Over the past week, we've seen plenty of pops at Barnes & Noble and Hot Topic, too! Black series seems to be sold out everywhere, though. We bought two Kylo's, one for each of us! That little commemorative lego brick next to him was given to us at Toys R Us for attending the midnight release. The back is dated September 4th 2015, so that's pretty neat!
The big poster of most of the new characters is one of my favorite finds! Nobody at Toys R Us seemed to notice the box of posters, so I snagged one. Who doesn't love a giant Star Wars poster in their room?! The Kylo Ren poster was actually another freebie given to us by Toys R Us and the paper is super glossy and nice. The one of Captain Phasma and the other stormtroopers is actually a tear out from the Kylo Ren coloring book below it! It also came with all those stickers. Only 5$ at Barnes & Noble!
LOOK AT THE MUG!! AHH! The Kylo Ren mug is gigantic and amazing, and I got my hands on one of the very last ones at Target. And of course, we couldn't resist picking up a Kylo Ren lightsaber at the Disney Store. The only thing I wish I'd gotten that I didn't was the Kylo Ren mask from the Disney Store that says phrases from the movie. It was super exciting playing with it in the store and hearing his voice and some lines for the first time! It was such a fun and exciting weekend! We got so many amazing things, and got super lucky on multiple occasions. Seeing everybody's excitement is just incredibly magical. I'm glad I get to experience all of this firsthand. What did you guys get? Or what are you planning on getting? Let me know in the comments!
